It’s that time of year again and what’s better than Hard Cider Long Island in the summer? Long Island Hard Cider in the fall! I mean, it’s fall, right? Think apple picking, eating apple pie…and drinking hard cider! It’s an awesome drink that’s really coming back into its own (it was bigger than beer at one point) and it keeps getting better and better here on Long Island.

You can enjoy so many great versions and more and more seem to keep coming. Like the local wine and beer boom, I think hard cider is coming on strong…and I am here for that. Aren’t you?

Channing Daughters

Channing Daughters is introducing their very first sparkling grape cider this year. It is made with the vineyard’s own grapes and apples grown and crushed at the Halsey’s family farm. The cider is going to be created petillant naturel or pét-nat, meaning the cider is bottled during the initial fermentation process, allowing the sugars to form bubbles naturally.

Find it at the winery or at The Milk Pail in Water Mill.

Riverhead Ciderhouse

The Riverhead Cider House is a true hard cider destination. It’s a really fun spot for young, old, friends, and families. It’s especially outstanding if you love locally produced hard cider. The atmosphere is festive but not rowdy. The crowd is typically vibrant, just enjoying life. Their 8,000-square-foot facility includes a tasting room, food, in-house entertainment and retail space. Rumor Mill Cider

The apples for this dry sparkling cider were grown on the North Fork of Long Island.

Apples are carefully selected blend of jonagold, fuji, cameo, pink lady, elstar, granny smith, mutsu, pippin snow sweet, rome, and empire varieties all sourced from prominent orchards on the east end of Long Island. Pressed at Jericho Cider Mill on February 13, 2013.

Pale lemon in color, this cider shows aromas of honey, baking dough and cinnamon. The palate is light in body, crisp and tart with notes of citrus, green apple and touch of minerality.

Pair this light, effervescent cider with a summer fruit salad, soft cheeses, grilled pork chops, roasted vegetables, or herbed risotto.

Wolffer Estate Vineyard

As much I love the North Fork and all of its bucolic, rural splendor, Wölffer Estate Vineyard might be one of the best destinations to enjoy a drink and some time among the vines. While their wines and beautiful tasting room is well-known for good reason (Summer in a Bottle rose anyone?), their hard cider is certainly making people take notice. Since 2013, Wölffer’s winemaker Roman Roth has been cranking out some really amazing ciders, and the variety keeps getting better and better.

You can enjoy red, dry white and dry rosé, a low-calorie and low-alcohol LoRo rosé, an herb-infused Botanical variety, and the a beautifully minty Grüner (my favorite). As you come to expect with this wonderful place, the bottles look great and you can pick them up at many spots all over Long Island (not just the vineyard). Like others on this list, the apples are sourced locally from the Halsey family, owners of the Milk Pail in Water Mill.

You can pick up Wӧlffer’s cider in bottles and cans (rosé only). You can enjoy it in their tasting room, their roadside wine stand area, and even just drive thru the mini-stand set-up in front of the winery in the parking lot.

Woodside Orchards

Woodside has been serving up hard cider goodies since 2012 among its orchard and apple cider donut deliciousness. There are always a number of options available like dry, sweet, and cinnamon. There are also so fruit infused ciders as well. Seasonally offerings like pumpkin apple, ginger apple, lemon apple and more are always a welcome treat. Fill up a big bag of apples, come into enjoy a cider flight, and leave with a bag of donuts or a pie. That’s not a bad day at all.
